About Us
History of The Co-op
Officially chartered on October 12, 1943, the Tignish Co-op was humbly created by community members to provide services of goods to sustain our local community.
From the modest location of a one room full serve retail general store, the Co-op has evolved over the past 78 years to one of the largest retail co-operatives in eastern Canada.
With a full-service food store, including departments in meat, produce, in store bakery, floral and groceries we provide the largest food selection in the western region of PEI. We also are a franchise operator of two Home Hardware Building Centers, Tignish and Alberton, and a Home Hardware general hardware store in O’Leary. We also operate a retail Shell fuel site and convenience center, and a sawmill.
Tignish Co-op is proud to represent over 4,500 member-owners and employs over 100 staff cumulative in our various locations.

As a co-operatively owned and directed business, the business is governed by a Board of Directors. These directors are chosen cyclically at the Annual Meeting of the organization by the member-owners of the Co-op.
The Board of Directors are responsible for the oversite and selection of the General manager, which reports directly to the Board on a scheduled basis.
The Board has a direct responsibility to ensure that the needs and philosophy of the Co-op movement are executed daily by the scope of direction to management.
